Ghee
Sattvic, healing, and tridoshic
Ghee: Ayurveda’s clarified gold
Ghee is considered one of the most sattvic and nourishing foods in Ayurveda. Suitable for all three doshas, it is prized for its digestive benefits and rich, clean taste. Use it in place of any cooking oil to support vitality and well-being.
Ingredients:
- 1 lb organic, grass-fed unsalted butter
Instructions:
- Place the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. As it melts, it will begin to bubble and separate. Foam will rise to the top, while solids settle at the bottom.
- Do not stir. Keep a steady simmer and let the butter cook until the bubbling sound softens, the bottom sediment turns golden, and the liquid becomes a clear amber color (about 18–20 minutes).
- Let it cool for 15 – 20 minutes. Strain through a cheesecloth-lined fine mesh strainer into a clean glass jar.
- Discard the solids. Ghee will solidify at room temperature. Store sealed, and avoid moisture to prevent spoilage.
Ghee does not need refrigeration and can last for over a year if stored properly. In Ayurveda, it’s often infused with herbs to deliver healing properties deep into the tissues.
Ways to use ghee
Ghee can be easily incorporated into your daily routine to support digestion, nourishment, and overall well-being.
Use ghee for the following:
- Morning ritual – Start your day with 1 teaspoon of melted ghee stirred into warm water or herbal tea to gently stimulate digestion.
- Culinary use – Substitute ghee for oil when sautéing, roasting, or frying to enhance flavor and improve digestibility.
- Herbal synergy – Blend ghee with traditional Ayurvedic herbs like ashwagandha, brahmi, or triphala to support absorption and effectiveness.
- Topical applications – Use warm ghee for nasya (nasal lubrication) or as a nourishing massage oil for the skin and joints.
